Program Description:
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has developed high and rigorous standards for what teachers should know and be able to do. Teachers pursuing National Board Certification document their practices through standards-based portfolio entries and engage in curricular exercises at an assessment center. Those who become National Board Certified Teachers have demonstrated an understanding and application of the standards as well as commitment to the Five Core Propositions on which NBPTS is based.

The Five Core Propositions are:

  1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  5. Teachers are members of learning communities.
Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's Degree
  2. Taught for three or more years with a valid state teaching license, in a K-12 school approved to operate by the state
National Board Certification Support Project:
  1. Encouragement, support, and recognition for National Board Certification candidates and National Board Certified Teachers
  2. Monthly support groups facilitated by National Board Certified Teachers
  3. Collegial forum for analysis and reflection on curriculum and pedagogy
  4. Information and consultation offered to Orange County school districts
  5. Pre-candidacy course with extended education units
