To earn a teaching credential in California, it is necessary to verify subject matter competency in one of the following ways:
- Pass the appropriate subject matter examination approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC)
- Complete a CCTC-approved subject matter program, major or its equivalent, or graduate degree in each core subject area.

- Test Prep Series classes beginning in September 2008 and running through May 2009.
- OCDE Test prep series instructs in the content areas for a Multiple Subject credential and for all core areas related to the Single Subject credential: English, mathematics, sciences and social sciences.
